Waco US registrations Waco export registrations Waco impressments by USAAF NOTE **: Parenthetical figures with double asterisks in some Waco entries are from flight tests presented in a company performance data review of 1/29/32, as reported by their test pilots, showing top speed and cruising speed at sea level with a full-load condition and standard equipment. NOTE: The first eight planes initially had no published designations and were numbered retrospectively in 1925. Despite this assignment, it is generally accepted that Cootie was the actual number one Waco and is often indicated as such. Baby Flying Boat (C J Brukner via Drina Welch Abel coll) "1" Baby Flying Boat 1919 = 1pOFb; 15hp Hendee pusher; span: 18'0" length: (undocumented). Elwood J Junkin, Clayton J Brukner. Mahogany veneer hull, demountable wheels for beaching; 6' propeller. The "Model 1" designation was more symbolic than accurate, as the ship was built before there was a Waco Company and was a "nice try" at best, but it is credited by some historians as a Waco product. Notably underpowered, with motor vibrations shaking the craft to an alarming degree, it would not unstick from the Lake Erie, so was retired to its room above a dance hall in Lorain OH, and none of the principals recalls its ultimate fate. This effort, however, led to the formation of DJB Aeroplane Co (qv), which was basis for Weaver Co the following year. Waco Cootie #1 (Andy Heins coll) Waco Cootie #1 (C J Brukner via Drina Welch Abel coll) 1 Cootie (Weaver) 1920 = 1pOhwM; 28hp Lawrance; span: 22'0" length: 16'0" load: 200# v: 65/x/35. Elwood Junkin. Empty wt: about 340#. $1,500; POP: 1, crashed in Apr 1923. A 30hp hydroplane version was begun, but never completed because of funding problems. 3 1920 - Envisioned by Junkin as "America's First Commercial Airplane," one that would do for aviation and Weaver Co what the Ford Model T did for surface transport and Ford Co, it was to be a larger, more powerful version of Cootie. Apparently some amount of construction was begun, but a shortage of funds led to cancellation of the project, and the model number was retired rather than transferred to a following project, perhaps with the thought it might be resurrected some day. Waco 4 (Andy Heins coll) 4 (Weaver) 1921 = 3-4pOB; 90hp Curtiss OX-5; span: 28'0" length: 23'0" load: 890# v: 84/x/33.
